Linda Parker introduced our speaker, Eva Hughes, Executive Director of
BARR Foundation.

The BARR Foundation was founded by William G Barr from Illinois. He was
the victim of a car bombing and had to have a limb amputated.
Unfortunately, he suffered from an improper amputation that caused him a
lot of pain. Mr. Barr found a European surgical procedure that
alleviated his pain and allowed him to be properly fitted for a
prosthetic.

He began the non-profit to provide free prosthetics for people with no
funding or insurance. They are able to assist with basic prosthetics
which can run anywhere between $10,000 and $80,000 each.

BARR Foundation also assists amputees in developing countries. Because
of the lack of proper prosthetics in some less developed nations, they
make sure prosthetic components arrive at their destination without
being hi-jacked into the black market.

In less developed nations, there are no laws that restrict the use of
used components in prosthetics. In the US, you cannot use previously
used components to make new prosthetics. Eva thinks that it would be
helpful to many people to allow this in the US.

In the state of FL, laws have been passed to make sure that prosthetic
professionals are qualified before fitting amputees with devices. Some
states do not require this and consequently, there are many that do not
perform services in a skilled manner. Unqualified individuals are able
to hang a shingle and then make body parts.

BARR Foundation also provides surgeons with an educational video which
helps them do the European procedure on patients that received bad
amputations or have bone spurs. This minimizes pain as well as allowing
a prosthetic to be properly fitted to the patient.

Bill O'Arnst did our drawing for Green Hat (appropriate for the day!)
Unfortunately, the Luck 'O the Irish was not with Kurt O'Godfrey who
drew the 5 of Clubs! Better luck next time!

The total of the hat today was $341.50....

We closed the meeting by reciting the 4 Way Test!

Happy St Patrick's Day!
