Delray Beach Rotary is participating in Pine Grove Elementary School's
Books for Birthdays program this year. We are asking each Rotarian to
give $20.00 to purchase books for the children for this worthy cause.
We will be collecting the money through May.
We congratulate Leo Phillips on his recent appointment as District
Governor at District Conference held at Hutchinson Island. We had 14
representatives from our club in attendance. Bob Teninga introduced Leo
Phillips for the first time to our club as our new DG. We were given
some highlights from District Conference. The purpose of our conference
is to bring Rotarians together for fellowship and fun, to get to know
one another, and exchange ideas with one another. Leo gave us some
highlights from his remarks and we also heard some recaps from Jimmy
Weatherspoon and Steve Bates.
Leo wanted to thank us for giving him strength during his illness last
summer. He appreciated the efforts of Nancy Owens who drove he and his
wife around last year. She is going to serve as the District Conference
chair next year. He also wanted to thank Kurt Godfrey who started him
on is journey to DG.
Jimmy gave us some of highlights of the Saturday luncheon. He
particularly enjoyed the speaker, Nelson Bailey, who is a judge and also
a Florida historian. Mr. Bailey spoke of the livestock that arrived in
Florida by means of the Spanish settlers even before St. Augustine.
Cuba served as a stockpile location for livestock which were purchased
by early Floridians and brought over. Eventually, the Indians forced
the Spanish out but the livestock remained. Today's animals are bred
from the same stock.
Mr. Bailey also brought his dog, Hot Dog. The breed of dog was used to
round up cattle, herd cows, and hunt. Once the dog had completed his
task and made a noise particular to this breed, the owner would know
that his livestock were home. Smart dog!
Steve talked about the Kentucky Derby party. There were 2 big screen
televisions set up to view the Derby. And, there was a hat judging for
ladies and gentleman. Ann Bright was one of the judges and made her
decision based on which hat was the most elegant and which one was the
craziest. It sounded like everyone there had a fabulous time.
On Sunday, the current DG handed off the banner to the new DG's home
club. Of course, as we all know, the banner didn't travel very far!
Leo gave a recap of his speech. He encouraged us to follow the lead of
the new Incoming President, John Kenny, by remembering that Rotary is in
each of our hands. We are responsible for growing our ranks for the
betterment of mankind. We must ensure the continuation of our good
works with the bequest society, increase of benefactors, and increasing
our membership. If we each sponsor one new member per year, we can make
our world a better place to live! In our next year together, Leo wants
us to remember to have hope, strength, peace, and reconciliation in a
troubled world. All of these things are possible if we remember it's up
to us! The future is in our hands.
President Steve recognized Chief James for being awarded one of South
Florida's most powerful black professionals.
Our green hat was $575.00. The ace of spades eluded us again and the
two of hearts was drawn instead. We play again next week.
