Minutes for July 28, 2009
Bob brought the meeting to order
Jimmy led us in two songs, # 57 ROTARY, #69 Smile
Invocation by David O'Connell reminds us to reflect upon our goals for
this year now that we are more than half done.
Harvey Brown shared that the International Space Station has 13
residents and great timing as ever, the commode is broken. Harvey also
introduced visiting Rotarians: Dave Freudenhoff of Boca Raton, and
Frieda Myerson of Yorktown Heights, NY.
Fred Bonardi gave the market report: the DOW was down 60 points and the
price of oil was $66.00 a barrel. Alan also shared a humorous Commode
story.
Roy Simon and Betsy Owen had anniversaries today.
There were 3 AWOL's today: Fred Bonardi, Jess Sowards, and Officer Joe
Milenkovic.
It was a slow day; the Sergeant of Arms reported $67.00 collected.
Betsy Owen awarded several members of our club with the distinction of
40 or more years of Rotary Membership with a plaque in recognition of
their attendance.

* Tom Cook, (has 42 years, but was not present)
* Bruce Wenzel, 46 years,
* Ernie Simon, 42 years.
Bob Teninga also recognized several other members for their attendance:
* Pat Archer, 13 years
* Betsy Owen, 8 years

* Nancy Owens, 1 year
Bob did Announcements:
* Kurt Godfrey printed sheets for the new members; PLEASE BRING
YOUR BLUE BOOKS NEXT WEEK TO ADD THE NEW MEMBERS!!
* Read with the kids at the Achievement Center is on Thursday of
this week, no sign up necessary, just show up 8-9 AM, 9-10 AM, or 3-4 PM
on Thursday.
* Thanks to the Mae Volen volunteers for their efforts
delivering food last Saturday. Abbey Wollins, David Buist, Linda Parker,
& Betsy Owen participated. The next food delivery for Mae Volen is on
August 29th 2009.
Tom Stanley introduced our lunch speakers from the Spady Museum in
Delray Beach;
* Daisy Fulton, Director,
* Vera Farrington, Founder,
* Charlene F. Jones, Director of Education.
Charlene Jones presented a power point slide show about the Spady Museum
some of the highlights were:
The Spady Museum is located at NW 5th Ave in Delray Beach
The Museum is run by EPOCH, Expanding and Preserving Our Cultural
Heritage
The only African American Cultural Center in Palm Beach County
The museum is the historical home of Solomon D. Spady the most
prominent African American educator and community leader in Delray Beach
from 1922 to 1957
Some of the programs and events include:
* Martin Luther King, Jr. breakfast,
* African American Lecture Series Outreach,
* Trolley Tour of the 5 districts,
* Kids Cultural Club's 3T program, and
* tours and class field trips.
The Spady Museum invites everyone to attend the Spady Living Heritage
Festival August 22, 2009 from noon until 10:00 PM. Admission is free and
fun for the whole family. This event celebrates life in Florida at the
turn of the century.
Ms. Vera Farrington recognized the help of the Simon brothers in getting
the Spady Museum through the years.
