Ramblings
8-25-09
Bruce Williams entertained us on the Piano
Jimmy Witherspoon performed the invocation, and then lead us in two
songs: Battle Hymn of the Republic, and If you are Happy and you Know it
Harvey Brown introduced our guest Rotarian: Tony Greenfield, from Cherry
Hill, NJ.
Tony Allerton gave the sergeant of arms report. We raised $57.00 today.
Leo Phillips spoke briefly and announced that the club's highest honor
"Service above Self" award is going to presented on November 3rd at
11:30 AM at the Old School Square. We will have our regular meeting at
that time, please come early. Nominations for the Service above self
need to be in by September 15th 2009 to the Committee (Nancy Owens, is
the chairperson)
Announcements:
* Mike Campbell made an announcement offering congratulations to
Mike Owens the husband of our Betsy Owens. Mike Owens was honored at a
convention for Florida Realtors. Out of 80,000 Realtors in Florida,
there were 1300 in attendance. Mike Owens received the award for his
passions of Eradication of Polio and Habitat for Humanity.
* Betsy reminded us that Rotary International is committed to
eradicate Polio by 2012.
* Special Announcement: Sarah Martin had her baby!
* Bob, Steve and others are going to present the Van that we
helped fund for the Good Will Industries Lighthouse for the blind.
* The last Saturday of every month is the Mae Volen food
delivery. Please join us!
* The achievement center for reading is this Thursday
Today's speaker is Hans Schatteman
Hans is the new president of our affiliated Rotaract Club of Delray
Beach! Hans has done a great job getting the club organized, and will be
giving us updates. There is also a lot of opportunity for working on
projects together.
Dave O'Connell reminded us that it is membership month. We all need to
try and find worthy new members. We need 10-12 members a year just to
break even. There also was a new members meeting following today's
lunch.
Bob discussed the need for some ideas to come to fruition for Fund
raising. We have several ideas and have tried several things in the
past. If you have a new idea or have a way to improve on an existing
idea, please email Bob, or contact the Fundraising committee.
Stormi was picked out of the green hat but did not find the Ace of
Spades. We are alive for another day.
Ramblings 9-1-09
Bruce did a wonderful job entertaining us. After which Mike Campbell did
an impromptu invocation and reminded us all to remember the four way
test.
Jimmy Witherspoon led us in two songs: America the Beautiful, and Home
on the Range.
We did not have any birthdays or Anniversary's today.
Harvey Brown announced that he had one make up.
There were no guests or visiting Rotarians.
Fred Bonardi gave us a grim stock market report. The Dow was down 160
points. Fred warned that this was probably going to be a down week.
Sergeant of Arms reported that we had $62.00 today. Fred Bonardi had 2
AWOLS (BOOO^2!)
Bob had some announcements:
* Thanks to the volunteers for the Achievement Center and Mae
Volen.
* We need to pursue some new fund raising plans. Please email
Bob if you have a good idea and want to get it on the agenda for a board
meeting.
* Book donations for Cat Island is still open. Please bring in
your books. Thanks to David O'Connell for bringing in books and to Alan
for several hundred books from the library.
* Bruce Williams has asked to see if there is a used piano that
anyone knows of. There will be a concert next week.
Tom Stanley had some technical difficulties with the lunchtime video, so
it was postponed for another day. (The story of a terminally ill
professor who was a guest of Oprah).
Tom also took this opportunity to remind us that each committee should
be meeting every 3 months or so.
Ernie Simon was picked out of the Green Hat but he picked the 4 of
diamonds. We are alive for another day.
