David Buist introduced our speaker: Kyle Abney the president of the
USGBC South Florida Chapter.
Kyle informed us about several facts about the Building Green, and the
LEED rating system:
* The LEED rating system gives a certified rating by a 3rd party
the efficiency of a building, similar to a food nutritional rating.
* A LEED certified building will use less water, consume less
electricity, be better for the environment, consume less non-sustainable
resources (old growth timbers), and be less toxic to the end users than
a traditional building.
* A LEED certified building has less than a 2% additional
investment that will usually repay itself in 3 years due to water and
energy efficiency.
* Florida as well as the nation has seen an exponential growth
in buildings being Leed Certified.
* There are 5 areas that the LEED rating system can help improve
a buildings' environmental impact: Site Selection, Water Conservation,
Energy Conservation, Indoor Air Quality, Materials and Resources.
* There are 4 levels of certification. Certified, Silver, Gold,
& Platinum.
