Harvey Brown introduced our esteemed library director, Alan Kornblau. Alan told us about the library's programs from womb to tomb. The Delray Beach Public Library is unique because it is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. They have their own board of directors and raise their own funds from private donations, but are also supported by the city and the Community Redevelopment Agency. This arrangement is actually less taxing on citizens than support by city funds alone. WE have a great bargain!
We have a lot to be proud of at the library. You can get almost any book you might want: Audio, comics (Alan heard you Harvey - Superman is on it's way!) Kids Books, large print section, and a teen center. For adults there are many happenings - a café, public meeting rooms, and computer training classes.
Our return on investment to the local economy is about $6.54 for every dollar received. The library is a health club for your brain! It serves as an anchor to the West Atlantic Avenue business corridor and over 2000 people go through their doors each day.
Bonnie Stelzer introduced us to the Lifelong Learning Center (LLC) at the library. In order to take actual courses, you do have to join. A membership is $15 per semester. With membership you have access to the entire LLC course offerings including free special events, invitations to social and educational events reserved exclusively for LLC, priority mailing of LLC brochures, and opportunities to be involved in volunteer and planning activities. They have an advisory committee and people are very excited about the offerings. It's a place where adults can discover, learn, and dream. Some of the spring offerings include: Paris and the Jazz Age; Rock and Roll: Its Roots, History, and Special Sounds; and Political Scandals that will Make Your Head Spin.
In the Fall 2010 LLC season there are exciting courses that include: The Last Days of Socrates, Digital Photography 101, Life After 9/11, and others.
