Ramblings for March 16, 2010

36th Anniversary for Nancy Owens, Congratulations!

Rotaract had their chartering ceremony on March 10, 2010 at the Delray
Beach Library. It was a great event; thank you to the Rotarians that
attended!

Special note from our District Governor, Leo Phillips regarding the
District Conference:

The District Conference website is up and running with information about
our April 30-May 2 District 6930 District Conference to be held at the
Hutchinson Island Marriott Resort. You may go to our District website
http://www.rotary6930.org/ <http://www.rotary6930.org/> where you will
find a "click here" link at the top left column of the home page, or
simply "click here <http://conference.rotary6930.org/> " to go directly
there from this email. The District Conference registration information
and form are located under the "Registration" tab at the top of the
page. As you will see on the meal and event reservation form, you may
make payment either by check (see details) or by credit card over the
internet. Hotel reservations must be made directly with the resort, and
there is a link for this under the "Hotel" tab. Be sure to make your
hotel reservation on or before April 6th to insure special room rate and
availability. Also check out the schedule of events under the "Schedule"
tab.

Our Speaker today was Harvey Brown. Harvey's talk focused on how the
United States could achieve energy independence. Some of Harvey's points
were:

1. Although the jury may still be out on global warming, massive
fluctuations in oil prices and the increasingly politically unstable
regions of the world that we buy oil from has necessitated our need to
find a more stable source of energy.

2. The United States has several underutilized natural resources
that could supply the United States energy needs for the foreseeable
future. These include energy from coal, nuclear, and natural gas.

3. Wind and solar energy have a limited role to play.

4. Since WWII we have known how to convert Coal to a usable
synthetic fuel. This process is environmentally neutral. This is a great
potential source because we have 240 Billion tons of easily recoverable
coal reserves in this country.

5. GE offered to build 45 plants to convert coal to fuel if the
government would guarantee the price of oil at $18.00 a barrel. Sadly
this initiative never went anywhere.

6. This country also has vast reserves of nuclear fuel. Nuclear
energy is starting to gain traction again in the United States because
Nuclear Energy is carbon neutral.

7. In addition to smaller light water nuclear reactors, there is a
Helium Nuclear reactor plant design that has its fuel incased in ceramic
spheres about the size of a softball. The great hope for the Helium
Reactor is that its waste product is safe to handle, and is not useable
for weapons.

Announcements: Please come to Bingo on March 25th! Sign up is $50.00 per
person. There are great prizes and a silent auction. Our MC's will be
Harvey Brown and Mark Denkler.
