scholarships our club provides from 10 to 7 @ $1,000 each. This was
necessary due to financial constraints.
Happy Birthday to Betsy Owen!
Our speaker was Dr. Patty Colander from FAU. She is a history professor
and currently serves on the review board that grants and considers
tenure to professors. Tenure was originally granted to preserve the
integrity of the grading system and to promote original ideas and
autonomy.
Recently, in the news, was a shocking story about a woman, Amy Bishop,
at Univ. of Alabama at Huntsville, who killed 3 colleagues during a
meeting. Dr. Colander would like for us to understand the process of
receiving tenure at a university. During the first three years, an
associate professor is expected to do research, teach, and publish 1-2
articles. During the 6th year, the professor is to present a portfolio
of his or her work to be reviewed for tenure. The work should consist
of articles, syllabi, grant writing, etc. The university will review
the portfolio and either grant or deny tenure to the associate
professor.
With the Amy Bishop case, she was denied tenure. This basically meant
that she would have one year left to teach and then have to find another
position. She was not a strong hire for UAH to begin with. Ms. Bishop
was ten years past her post doctoral degree with no permanent position
prior to signing on at UAH. She had no publication history throughout
her time at UAH and no grant writing was done during the 6 years leading
up to her application for tenure in 2008. Her future employment looked
bleak as a result of her lack of past work. She was also the bread
winner for her family.
In order to help facilitate professors toward tenure, FAU mentors and
monitors their progress. It is in the mutual interest of the professor
and of the faculty to have successful tenured professors.
Green Hat - $409.......Dave Buist lucky winner but drew the 9 of
hearts......Better luck next week!
